Guru

I’m the owner of Northern Colorado Martial Arts Academy.

When I was a child, I began my martial arts journey and the positive impact it had on my life was remarkable. It was always my dream to someday open my own school and pass on the skills, knowledge, and inspiration Pencak Silat has given to me.

I was born and raised in Colorado and enjoy mountaineering, fishing, and freestyle skiing with my wife and kids. I began my martial arts journey in 1987 practicing Shotokan in Englewood, Colorado. I have been tested and certified in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and hold the rank of International 9th degree Black Belt with Close Quarter Combat Instructor certification. I have had the privilege of studying pencak silat and serving as intern of Lakutama under Ki Poleng Sudamala 10th deg. Inti Ombak, Tjahyadi Tanudjaja 10th deg. Inti Ombak , and Daniel Prasetya 10th deg. Inti Ombak, direct descendant of Hamengkubuwono I, the first Sultan of the Mataram-Jogja kingdom, while studying in Surabaya, Yogyakarta, and Jarkarta Indonesia.

I received my National level 1 Wasit/Juri certification and National level 1 coach certification for international competition sport silat, from PERSILAT, the world governing body of the sport, while in Indonesia in 2018.

I also currently serve as President of U.T.A.M.A., United Teachers Association for Martial Arts a 501c3 non profit, President of USSSA, (PERSILAT) United States Sports Silat Association, President of PSFA, (PERSILAT) Pencak Silat Federation of the Americas, and I am U.S. Center for SAFESPORT certified.

Now, I proudly serve the Ault community and feel an overwhelming sense of pride and humility when I see our students grow into happier, healthier, more confident children, teens, and adults!

Jake is fantastic! The classes are great, he is awesome with the kids and challenges them to push themselves to be better. We have a boy in the 5 and under group who is excited for every class and is learning tons of practical skills and movement.

Our sons love going here! Jake is a fantastic teacher with lots of knowledge that he willingly shares with his students. He promotes a fun environment with a mix of basic, fundamental skills but also keeps kids engaged with games or unique drills. It’s a martial arts class and can sometimes get physical, especially if students are choosing to be disruptive or disrespectful. He is a strong, fatherly figure and a great mentor for our young boys. I would highly encourage anyone to try out his classes, you can always just stop going if you don’t like it! The police won’t force you to keep going or anything, even though they also endorse how Jake teaches!

The school has been a great escape for me and really helped me through some tough times. The environment is always happy and fun and keeps me in the moment. I’ve learned a lot about the art and myself as a result of joining. It also opened a once in a lifetime opportunity for me in Indonesia which I wouldn’t trade for anything. I recommend it to my best friends and family any chance I get.

A fantastic environment for a wide range of activities. Very family friendly, supportive of the local community and also building international bonds.

Northern Colorado Martial Arts Academy

Although many people think the martial arts are just about fighting, the truth is that the physical “kicking and punching” are really just the tools that I use to teach the more important, and MUCH more valuable lessons about yourself.
